With her background in Fine Art, and extensive experience in screen printing, influences have come from different directions, and Melanie’s style has developed over time.
Living in the vibrant and visual city of Hong Kong, surrounded by highly illustrated banners, signage and skyscrapers inspired Melanie to focus her attentions on illustration.
Her evolved style has seen bolder, fresher designs, but always with a focus on colour.
Melanie’s inspiration comes from her surroundings and the colours around her. She is drawn to bright, strong, saturated colour and the blues, greens and yellows of her local landscape can be seen in her work.
For the Cornish Sea Salt project, the ingredients were the key focus. Liquid acrylic, which works like watercolour but with stronger colour, combined with pen and ink, were applied to watercolour paper to create the illustrations.
Usually up by 7am if the weather is good, Melanie gets out into Porthleven or makes a beeline for the coastal path to sketch before heading home for breakfast.
Melanie likes to cook and she and her husband who runs a small church down on the Lizard eat lots of salads, with fresh ingredients, including locally caught fish. They have recently started experimenting with Seaweed Salt and particularly like it sprinkled on a tomato salad!
